The
work and the aim of the Association is not solely to guard the keys
of the Nine Doors and study the worlds to which they lead. Instead,
its humanistic foundation presumes a gslobal conception of human life.
Each detail is a sign, a symbol of the universal, yet the external
manifestations in objects and behaviour will only respond in full
to the supreme law of Harmony if there is an organic general criterion
and this criterion is respected. An individual's inclinations urge
anyone capable of strong passion to make a full, in-depth study of
the object of his personal interest, yet we should never lose sight
of the view of the whole. From this viewpoint, it is not the single
manifestations of taste which should be sought, but the invisible
link that joins and justifies them all.
By
statute and by vocation, our adventure takes us as far as our gaze
can reach. Nevertheless, it would be extremely arrogant to believe
or make people believe that there is nothing beyond the insurmountable
limit of individual experience and culture. An attitude of this kind
would betray something even more serious: a lack of imagination and
sensitivity.
So
the Ninth Door thus deserves to be given a special description: an
area undefined. If we fastened the necklace of Pleasures, it would
turn into a chain. Shut behind the bars of a cage, Taste would easily
force a way out and turn against us. There is much we do not know
and much we hope one day to learn. Similarly, there are other things
we do not wish to mention for fear of being misunderstood or merely
because we are aware that so many small things, once shared, vanish
into nothing. Finally, there is what we hope exists which we prefer
not to mention for fear of discovering that it does not exist after
all. This last entrance conceals all these unknown, unrevealed or
non-existent things.
Pedantic
teaching is not our concern. It is our wish instead to learn, so let
us clearly state our ignorance in these few lines concluding the description
of the knightly universe before it is too late to do so. In the Contributions
at the bottom, on the Blackboard of the Ninth Door, we invite others
to bring to our attention any requests, objects and interests which
are not covered by the ordinary Doors. Though these may represent
the ideal scenario we have chosen to move in, they do not limit our
movement beyond them.
